London Transport
For the budget conscious and for daily use London has a great network of public transport - buses, tube (Underground) and mainline train services that can get you anywhere you need to go. Each system is run independently but you can buy a variety of daily, weekend, weekly, monthly or annual tickets that combine to work on all the systems and save you money. Don’t forget to ask about any discount schemes or regional reductions you may be eligible for. Visit London Transports’ website on www.tfl.gov.uk.
Oyster
The 'Oyster Card' system is the cheapest, quickest way to get around London. You can appy for one at www.tfl.gov.uk.
When boarding a bus or entering a tube station, you simply tap your oyster card on the yellow readers. Prices are considerably cheaper than buying cash tickets.
Tube
The tube service operates for 20 hours per day, and can be the fastest and most direct route to your destination. You may consider where a tube station is located when deciding where you want to live. Peak hours can be busy on this very efficient system. To calculate a journey by tube, roughly estimate 3 minutes per station on zones 1 – 3. Allow a little longer for the outer zones. Being underground it is not a sightseeing route!
Buses
There is a large network of bus routes right across the region, operating a very simple fare scheme for £2 wherever you need to go (if you do not have a Travel Card or Oyster card). It is worth obtaining a bus map for your locality. The services start early, around 5.30/6.00 a.m. and finish late around 11.30 p.m./12.00 midnight, with a Night Service to many locations. The Night Service extends much later than the tube service.
Taxis
Black Cabs are a quick, safe, easy way to get wherever you want to go in London, however, they can be fairly expensive. You can hail them down if you see one on the street.
Minicabs are cheaper, but you will have to order one in advance through your local company. At night, make sure that you only get into licenced mincabs.

Trains
There is an extensive network of train services that operate into, and across London that can be combined with bus or tube journeys to get you to your destination. All the London airports (Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Luton, London City) are served by regular and efficient train services into Central London, with direct connections onto the tube system.
